SHELBY X Yoko Ono (Art X Activism)
Art x Activism
Much like the counterculture of the 1960s, when Yoko Ono was creating internationally recognised work, today’s generation of artists are using their skills to challenge social injustice and visualise a more equal world.
ART X ACTIVISM was a youth and community arts project we ran in summer 2019. It recognised art as a powerful tool; a language that can be used to highlight oppression, inform people and guide social actions. The project saw Bristol creatives run a series of workshops, exploring art techniques typically used in activist settings, such as sign painted protest posters and film pieces that focus on the human experience. The young artists that participated developed emotive artworks, expressed their political concerns and discussed how art can challenge the colonisation of the imagination.
